DANCE CLASS DESCRIPTIONS & PROGRAMS
Ballet, known for its grace and elegance, is the foundation of dance. Students will learn the fundamental basics of Ballet as well as elaborate formal techniques. Dancers will learn proper placement of the arms, alignment of the body and terminology while cultivating control, strength and grace of movement.
Acro dance is a style of dance that beautifully combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. Known for its athletic nature and unique choreography, which effortlessly blends dance and acrobatics. Taking this class will work on your overall flexibility, strength, and balance for all ages, beginner to advanced.
LEAPS & TURNS
This is a technique class that focuses mainly on jumping and turning — two technical elements of dance that are used in almost all forms of dance and choreography. This class is specifically designed to teach students how to properly prepare and complete a jump or a turn in order to execute the moves safely and effectively with ease and to prevent injury. The ability to jump and turn correctly is highly influential to a dancer’s technical progress and development, and will improve their overall performance, especially in other styles of dance.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
This is an hour-long class which is specifically dedicated to building core strength and increasing endurance and flexibility. Students will learn safe yet effective exercises that will improve their overall dance performance and physical fitness. This class includes elements of cardiovascular training, yoga, and core building exercises, which all help to create a stronger dancer. Classes will vary, as different areas of the body will be the main focus for each week. Students will also learn exercises to improve or achieve their splits, and to become more flexible and strong.
Each student responds to the demands of pointe preparation differently, and some will need longer than others to be ready for pointe work. Students will be notified BY THEIR TEACHER when they are ready to go en pointe. Please do not buy pointe shoes before receiving NOTICE! We will provide information about fitting pointe shoes, so that students can be PROPERLY FITTED and learn the proper care techniques for their feet and pointe shoes. Beginners on toe will spend approximately ten minutes per class en pointe at the barre, and will gradually build up their time as their strength develops. Please feel free to speak with our teachers about any concerns you may have about pointe work.
Pointe work is an exciting and essential part of a ballet student’s training. Our students WILL begin preparing for pointe work WHEN CERTAIN PRE-POINTE *CRITERIA REQUIREMENTS ARE MET; when they add 30 minutes to their normal class time to take Pre-Pointe. During this time they work in flat shoes to learn pointe technique, and combinations, and to develop the strength they will need to dance en pointe. Thera bands will also be used to aide in ankle and foot strength.
*CRITERIA REQUIREMENTS AVAILABLE AT THE STUDIO.
Tap is an exciting form of dance in which dancers wear special shoes equipped with metal taps. Tap dancers use their feet like drums from metal plates that are attached to both the ball and the heel of the dancer’s shoe. These metal plates, when tapped against a hard surface, create a percussive sound therefore the dancers are considered to be musicians. Our tap program will follow the Al Gilbert method. Students will learn rhythm, help build aerobic fitness as well as muscle control.
Students will begin by performing warm up exercises to stretch muscles in an effort to prevent injuries. Core strengthening exercises will be used for conditioning. Students will also learn across the floor steps and combinations that will increase in difficulty as the dancer progresses. Jazz dancers benefit from a strong knowledge of ballet technique therefore the jazz dance curriculum commonly includes ballet training. Jazz dance encompasses various techniques including centre control, spotting and pointing. Our program follows the Al Gilbert Method.
Jazz Funk is a popular style of dance which incorporates elements of Jazz and Hip-Hop. This is a great class for a traditional Jazz or Ballet student, if they would like to learn more of an urban style, or if they would like to transition over to a Hip-Hop class. This class is fast, fierce and FUN!
Musical theatre dance is a form of theatre combining music, songs, spoken dialogue and dance. Students will learn how to communicate the emotional content of a piece through words, music and movement. Students will learn classic Broadway Theatre Dance movement and styles, in a fun, supportive, and encouraging environment. Perfect for the singer/actor who wants to improve their technique by learning style, acting, and performance skills, or for anyone who just loves musical theatre. Technique, vocabulary, style, and performance will also be covered.
Lyrical dance in a dance style that combines elements of ballet, modern and jazz dance techniques. It is set to music with vocals or strictly instrumental music. The name lyrical comes from the word “lyrics” because dancers use the lyrics of a song or instrumental music to inspire them to do certain movements or show expression. Lyrical dancers incorporate gestures, facial expression, and controlled movements in order to execute their movements and emotions fully. Besides emotional connection to music, lyrical dance typically encourages use of articulation, line, weight, and movement qualities. Lyrical dance is technically very demanding for the dancer and generally requires intermediate to advanced technical skills and emotional focus.
Hip-hop dance refers to social or choreographed styles primarily danced to hip-hop music as seen in your favourite music videos or have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. This includes a wide range of styles notably breaking, locking, and popping which were developed in the 1970s. This high energy class is fun for dancers of all ages from children to adults. It’s a great way to either get in shape or stay fit.

The art of composing, planning and arranging the movements, steps, and patterns of dancers. Choreography class gives students the opportunity to explore their creative side and ideas to create dances.
